Alan David Doane is a No-Class Scumbag

Joe Kubert, the beloved, legendary comic artist who passed away on August 12, 2012, was not even buried yet by his family when Alan David Doane (a literal nobody in the comics industry) decided to compare Mr. Kubert to Joe Paterno, the American Football coach who was fired by Penn State as a result of the child sex abuse scandal involving his former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The basis of this comparison? Doane didn't like Kubert's involvement with a comic book project.

"I'll always remember Joe Kubert as a scab artist who chose a paycheck over decency in signing on to DC's egregious Before Watchmen project," Doane wrote.


Despite comments from others on his blog, Doane chose to keep his disgusting attack on Mr. Kubert on his website even on the day of Mr. Kubert's memorial services.

For his despicable act of attention-seeking at the expense of mourners, we grant Alan David Doane the Scumbag Award.

The man isn't yet buried, and while the rest of the comics community grieves his passing, you've decided to go on the record accusing him of scab labour? Whatever you think about the 'Before Watchmen' project, and I'm not great fan of it myself, it's nothing like scab labour. Nobody is taking food from the mouths of Alan Moore and his family, for a start. Furthermore, would you extend this vitriol to all the creators who've worked on Jack Kirby created properties over the years? How about Siegel and Schuster's stuff? Not to say that it's right, but can we at least have some consistency? As for the parallels you draw between Kubert's ethics and those of the late Joe Paterno, words fail me. Kubert inked a (moderately) controversial comic book. By contrast, Joe Paterno failed to inform the relevant authorities about serious allegations of child abuse. As I said, words fail me. let me get this straight, you take the opportunity that someone has passed away, to publish an article for the sole purpose of ranting about your distaste of a comic book series? And then you have the nerve to compare it to Joe Paterno who sat by and let kids get molested? Wow. You thoroughly undermine the point you're trying to make by comparing Joes Kubert and Paterno.
It's perfectly acceptable to not like that Kubert did Before Watchmen. It's acceptable to not like Kubert for it. Finding a way to liken it to covering up child abuse is ridiculous. It makes you look petty. It cheapens what was done to innocent children. And it makes me think you're not qualified to participate in this debate. – Justin Peniston
